My Remix Project

ARTIST STATEMENT:

With limited time and unlimited ideas, the best way for me to complete the project in time was through Photoshop. I have vintage magazines at home, so I took pictures of the pages that interested me and scanned them onto my computer to manipulate them. I thought of a real-world concept that has impacted me personally. My concept was about how widespread media has created unrealistic and toxic standards to uphold and how you can unleash fantastic potential by shifting your perspective on life and media. I portrayed this concept through a collage. In the background, I used old magazine ads and clippings from my collection that said degrading things such as: “Don't be fat” and “Living in a material world.” I altered these scans so they were completely black and white, and they were duller. Then I took a black and white hand that I found uncopyrighted online and took a picture of a crumpled paper. This made it look like the hand was pulling the paper back from the background. Then, behind the pulled-back paper, I put more scanned pictures of landscapes, wildlife, animals, and bright flowers. I put them in to provide a stark contrast against the dull, hostile newspaper. I also put a filter on the collage to make it seem more vintage and flow nicely together. My collage is trying to portray that by shifting your perspective on what you watch and hear, you can unleash a healthier and brighter part of your life that you might not have thought was there before. I then drew on some neon lines of different colors to exaggerate the contrast between the newspaper.
